Happy Mother’s Day!

May 9, 2010

Janice Sutherland submitted this wonderful caption for our April caption contest. I loved it, but it didn’t strike me as the perfect match for our April image… since the mother in that image had clearly already spent the entire day in the kitchen cooking dinner. So I dug up this family breakfast scene. I thought it was the perfect canvas for Janice’s wit!

Thank you, Janice!

Wow! I get to give birth AND change diapers!

I may joke around a bit about the trials and tribulations of motherhood…

…but in all honesty, the greatest joy of my life has been being a mother to my wonderful, beautiful, delightful, sparkling daughter. (I’d like to post a hundred pictures so I could share a tiny bit of her amazingness with you, but she is a very private person.) And now I get to experience the heart-stopping joy of watching her be an amazing mother to her daughter.

On my very first Mother’s Day, 28 years ago, my sister Liz sent me this card:

As you can probably surmise, I’m not a particularly sentimental person, but this card made me cry 28 years ago, and it makes me cry today. I love being a mother. And I absolutely adore my daughter.

Happy Mother’s Day!

David Bromberg – Sweet Dreams

May 6, 2010

I dreamed that David Bromberg told me he’d like to cook dinner for me. It was very exciting. Sadly, before we got as far as the kitchen my 14-year-old nephew Brian asked me (in my dream) to go for a walk with him. Way, to go, Brian!

Anyway, that’s about as erotic as my dreams get these days.

Why am I sharing this intimate and somewhat embarrassing information?

Well… David Bromberg has been the god of my idolatry since I was a teenager. I fell deeply in love with him in 1974, when I was nineteen years old. Thirty-seven years, three marriages, and the fact that David himself has been a happily married man for many years have done nothing to dampen my ardor. I still love him so much it hurts. (Even typing his name gives me chills!)

All dressed up and nowhere to go… except the kitchen

May 3, 2010

I’ve been wondering for years what could be so enthralling to these two ladies. A ham’s a ham, right? Hah! That’s where you’re wrong!

Carmen Askew, winner of our April caption contest, figured out once and for all what the culinary excitement is really about:

I laugh every time I look at this! Thank you, Carmen!

Before I go on to list the honorable mentions, I’d like to explain how I choose a winner. At the end of the month I go through all the captions, checking off a dozen or so that I especially like. I wait a few hours (thanks to my rapid mood swings, something that wasn’t especially funny two hours ago might be hilarious now). Then I go through the captions a third time, choose my absolute favorite… and I few more that were really, really hard to eliminate. Only then do I look at the names of the brilliant writers.
