I love June. I hate computers.

June 29, 2010

Especially new ones. I took a zillion pictures of my gorgeous June garden, or our beautiful June sunsets, and of the bluebirds nesting on my front portal… but I can’t figure out how to load them onto my new #%&@*!!!!! computer. So I hope you won’t mind a few pictures of the same scene a couple years earlier. The flowers are bigger this year, but the bluebird looks just about the same.

Happy Father’s Day

June 19, 2010

This is my Dad when he was young and handsome, sitting on the front steps with, from left to right, me, my brother Rick, and my sister Liz.

My Dad did not believe in Father’s Day – or Mother’s Day. He said they were fake holidays invented by the merchants to sell more stuff. As a merchant myself, I have to wonder “what’s wrong with that?” Dad and I did not agree on everything.

This is my first Father’s Day since I lost my father, and I have been thinking about him more than usual, and shedding just a few more tears than usual.

At Last!

June 15, 2010

I apologize for being missing in action for so long! Let me know if you want to see my list of excuses.

But I’m back with such exciting news that you’ll forget all about my two weeks of total silence. Yes, our new products for summer ’10 are finally here! (Well, most of them are. Keep your eyes open for another introduction at the end of the month.)

I am most excited to introduce our new Taintorettes, Henrietta Warrick Chase and her sister Janet Warrick Webster! As you all know by now, it is next to impossible to find images of non-Caucasian women in 1940s and 1950s print media. But thanks to Amber Doe, Gal Friday, I found another way to inject a little diversity into my line. When Amber came to work for us she asked if she could use her grandmother’s picture on her business card. (I use the woman from “hurrah! at last I’m 50!”)

I loved Amber’s card so much…

that I asked her if her grandmother would consent to becoming a Taintorette. And she said yes! Henrietta and Janet are the very first Taintorettes who were never professional models… though they are certainly as beautiful as any professional models I have seen.

Please welcome Henrietta…

and Janet…

Thank you, ladies!

And check out our other new magnets and sticky notes too. Read more

Male nude hang-gliding

June 1, 2010

One member of the ATI team was slightly grossed-out by the idea of male nude hang-gliding.

But I think that the horror of the imagined image of male nude hang-gliders soaring over the park, juxtaposed with the sweetness of the actual image of these two demure young ladies, is exactly what makes Kathleen Newsom’s winning submission so delightful. That and her completely plausible explanation for why these gals are focused so intently and happily on something we can’t see just beyond the upper edge of the image. Thank you, Kathleen!!!

you're right! male nude hang-gliding is a great spectator sport!
