Greetings from Maine!

July 5, 2011

I thought I remembered how heinous moving was… and I remembered it as hell. But I am here to tell you that it’s far worse than that! The movers arrived with a van full of my studio 12 days ago, and I have still not assembled it into any kind of order. AND my laser copier is broken. Those of you who know what a dinosaur I am know that I use the old scissors-and-glue method to put captions on images… so I can’t possibly post the finalists of the June caption contest until that copier is functioning and/or replaced. I sincerely apologize for the delay, and I appreciate your patience.

Meanwhile, the image for the July caption contest is up at last! This image appeared in my line back in 1999 with the caption “golly! that was fun!” My mother thought it was pornographic. I’d like to bring this wonderful image back, but I don’t want to offend the sensibilities of my mother or of our many, many other fans who prefer not to think about sex. I think she looks as though she’s relaxing after a lovely warm soak. Or perhaps contemplating the joys of the day ahead. The perfect caption not only snags the writer a $100 gift certificate to our e-store… it may also rate inclusion in our product line!

Years ago the niece of this model called me. She told me that when her aunt was a teenager she lived on Staten Island and yearned to be a star. One day she ditched school, made her way to this photo shoot in Manhattan… and then was grounded for life. The niece promised to dig up a photo of her aunt when she was crowned the winner of her nursing home beauty contest 60 years later. (If you are out there, niece, I’m still waiting.)

I was planning to pick the winner of the caption contest myself this month, but I was saved by my famous lack of organization! I had my office send me captions only so I wouldn’t be tempted to peek at the names of the writers… and then I promised you a winner today… and then I didn’t get to it until my office was closed so I couldn’t get names. Does that all make sense? Anyway, I figured there was no sense posting a winning caption (supposing I could make a decision anyway) unless I could also post the name of the winner. The long and the short of it is: you get to vote again! Shall we say you have until midnight Thursday? (Midnight wherever you are; I won’t be checking votes until Friday.)

Ta-daa!

I’ve been missing in action again. I don’t suppose that surprises anyone at this point.

But this time it has been for a very good reason!

I pitched an idea to Chronicle Books… and they said “great idea! can you do it in two weeks?” So I have been busily putting together a cocktail recipe book (!) which will be available from Chronicle in fall of 2011 – just in time for Christmas giving! You can bet we’ll be selling it in our web store.

I got the first draft off to Chronicle… and now I am in the recipe-testing stage. Nice work if you can get it.

August’s caption contest winners

September 1, 2010

I suck at multi-tasking. Which is unfortunate because my job pretty much IS multi-tasking. In the last two days I completed the final designs for my (exciting) January line and began work on my (at least as, if not more exciting) May line. I placed the final purchase orders for new designs for January. I reviewed inventory and placed last minute orders for product we need for this year. I worked on sales projections for our 2012 budget. I started writing copy for our January catalog. And I began work on a new book (!!!). Really, I love my job! This is just my roundabout way of saying: I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I know it has been forever since I posted.

Thank goodness caption-contest-winner-day rolled around to get me back in gear.

July caption contest winners

August 3, 2010

What does one do when one is all alone in the desert and one’s internet connection is down? First, I go for a long walk. But the internet has been down for a really, really long time, so I’ve taken the opportunity to cut and paste and scan NINE of my favorite caption submissions from July. When, if ever, the internet is back up, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

The winner, offering incontrovertible proof that we create our own realities, is Ellen Mcdonald:

Congratulations, Ellen!

(Before I share my other July favorites I want to disclose that I tweaked a caption here and there. Nothing much… a word here, an ellipsis there… and no disrespect intended to the writers. I believe I was born to be an editor; I just can’t help myself.)
