August’s caption contest winners
I suck at multi-tasking. Which is unfortunate because my job pretty much IS multi-tasking. In the last two days I completed the final designs for my (exciting) January line and began work on my (at least as, if not more exciting) May line. I placed the final purchase orders for new designs for January. I reviewed inventory and placed last minute orders for product we need for this year. I worked on sales projections for our 2012 budget. I started writing copy for our January catalog. And I began work on a new book (!!!). Really, I love my job! This is just my roundabout way of saying: I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I know it has been forever since I posted.
Thank goodness caption-contest-winner-day rolled around to get me back in gear.
Don’t Fence Me In
It was one year ago – while I was in New York exhibiting at the National Stationery Show – that my soul mate Pepper went blind.

After he had cataract surgery in June I had to keep him caged or on a leash (absolutely no running or jumping), away from dust (we live in New Mexico: Land of Enchantment… and Dust), and out of the sun for THREE MONTHS! (i.e. the entire summer)
So every evening after the sun went down I would take him for a short walk and this is what I would sing:
Three months of leash-walks and massacring this song (no, I don’t sing as well as Willie) did amount to some good: Pepper can see! And this Shopper:

Winter in Youngsville, New Mexico
My husband Nathan and I moved to tiny Youngsville, NM in December of 1999. Youngsville (formerly known as El Rito de los Encinos; the first postmaster – Mr. Young – decided to honor himself by changing the name) is so small (in the last few years the population has skyrocketed to 112) that very few New Mexicans have even heard of it. In order to avoid lengthy explanations and dubious looks, we just tell people we live in the neighboring metropolis of Coyote (population: 1,543).
Youngsville is gorgeous in the winter. Because there is so little traffic, the snow stays gloriously white until the day it melts. Freddie is rarely able to make it in to my studio in his UPS truck, but driving out to the highway to meet him is a very small price to pay for all this loveliness:
