Each spring as the flowers bloom, the weather warms and men start removing their shirts, we’re like “HEY, WTF“! In this day and age, women are still getting dirty looks and even having the cops called on them for natural acts like breastfeeding in public. We’re seeing giant advertisements with almost-completely-uncovered everything but told that it’s indecent for us regular ladies to uncover in public.
But lately, we’ve also seen Scout Willis shopping for flowers topless in NYC…thanks for standing up against ridiculousness, Scout Willis is quoted as saying “I am not trying to argue for mandatory toplessness, or even bralessness…What I am arguing for is a woman’s right to choose how she represents her body — and to make that choice based on personal desire and not a fear of how people will react to her or how society will judge her. No woman should be made to feel ashamed of her body.”
In NYC it’s legal for anyone to be topless anywhere you are legally allowed to be (just not on instagram). Facebook *just* allowed breastfeeding pics and will no longer be removing them from user accounts. If you’re interested in equal rights and stopping censorship, check out #freethenipple, a campaign by some awesome women & men that hopes to normalize the perception of breastfeeding and limit female censorship in the media and society.
And from Anne, a list of topless laws by state…
